Painting this mural in Coburg, Naarm, gave me the chance to share something meaningful with the local community. Beside a park, it is easily accessible, especially to kids who light up at the bright colours and playful whales. I enjoyed working on the piece and connecting with people who stopped by to express their appreciation. These conversations made the experience even more special.
As a designer of built environments, I’ve learned a great deal about people, spaces, and experiences. My interest in creative placemaking inspires me to design spaces that foster interaction and a sense of belonging. This mural was a way to put that passion into practice, transforming an everyday space into something vibrant and shared.
Beyond its community presence, the mural carries a deeper message. It reflects my perspective on the power of positive energy. Through a bright palette and expressive forms, I aim to show how positivity can radiate, inspire others, and bring people together. Small acts of positivity can have a ripple effect and uplift the collective.

The story of the 52-hertz whale, often referred to as the “world’s loneliest whale” and referenced in pop culture as a symbol of quiet resilience, has always inspired me. Even though it calls at an unusual frequency, it still follows its usual migration and finds its own way to thrive, echoing the universal longing for connection that many of us experience.
The whales are a special and personal element that I intentionally incorporated into the mural. They symbolise not only hope and connection within a community but also the beauty of embracing one’s individuality. For me, this artwork serves as a reminder that loving and accepting ourselves is the first step in connecting meaningfully with others. By celebrating what makes us unique, we can inspire hope, create a sense of belonging, and help make communities where everyone feels seen and connected.
